SKINZ - NEW SEASON (FEAT. KIRKY) [63%]

“New Season" - A Glimpse into Urban Realities

In the heart of the UK rap scene, Skinz & Kirky present "New Season", a raw narrative delivered over a rough rap beat. Musically, the track is a paradox: the beat, crafted by the duo RQ and OJ, is undeniably powerful, yet it lacks complexity, featuring moody pads and standard Trap drums.

The video, directed by Big Boss RG under Resistant Productions, is where this project truly shines. With scenes shot atop DUB 5's rooftop in central London, the visuals boast elegance and professionalism. Nighttime aerial shots of iconic landmarks like The Shard set a captivating backdrop. The video innovatively explores an indoor rain scene, a rare concept in UK music videos. With classy visual effects and dynamic drone shots, the video elevates the track's appeal, offering a subtle narrative that aligns with Skinz's gritty portrayal of the trap life.

Skinz's lyricism, delivered in his distinct Sheffield accent, echoes the street tales of Blade Brown, capturing the essence of raw, unfiltered rap. However, his lyricism tends towards predictability, adhering to conventional themes of street life, incarceration and materialism. Kirky's melodic chorus offers a refreshing contrast, yet its fluidity could benefit from a tighter composition.

While the track's themes are consistent, touching on trust issues, street codes, and personal triumphs, Skinz's delivery occasionally falters, leading to stretched flows and forced rhymes. Skinz’s exudes a conceited energy throughout the track further emphasised by the chorus with Kirky's line, "slapped a 50 on the wrist, and now they say I take the piss".

"New Season" provides a glimpse into urban realities, melding a gritty lyrical narrative with visually stunning elements. Despite its musical simplicity and unsurprising lyrical content, this collaboration finds redemption in its captivating aesthetics, creating a seamlessly flattering correlation between track and visuals.
